A Brief Return of Light to the Tunnels of Zeljava
After decades of darkness since 1992, light briefly returned to the tunnels of Zeljava in a powerful symbolic tribute. Enthusiasts re-illuminated parts of the underground complex, honoring its history through photography, teamwork, and a shared respect for what once stood beneath the mountain.
On May 16th, 1992, darkness fell over the tunnels of Zeljava. With one final act of destruction, the lights that once pulsed through this underground giant were extinguished—abruptly and mercilessly. What followed was not just the absence of electricity, but the presence of deep, undisturbed shadow.
For decades, the cold concrete corridors remained buried in silence.
Until now.
It’s a shame to see such an extraordinary complex left unused and deteriorating. From the aircraft entrances onward, the entire underground structure is incredibly attractive for visitors. Just minutes from Plitvice Lakes, it has the potential to become a destination visited by thousands — if given the attention it deserves.
Driven by passion and reverence, a group of enthusiasts behind the Zeljava LYBI initiative set out to achieve something symbolic. They did not attempt reconstruction. They did not alter the structure. Their goal was simple yet powerful: bring light back, even if only temporarily.
This was not a spectacle. It was a gesture.
A quiet act of remembrance inside one of Europe’s most impressive underground airbases.
Together, they transformed darkness into illumination — if only for a moment.
