Douglas C-47 Skytrain (Dakota)

This impressive piece of aviation history welcomes visitors with open wings, standing as one of the first signs you’re on the right path toward Zeljava Airbase. The Douglas C-47 Skytrain, known as the Dakota, officially entered service with the U.S. Army Air Forces shortly before the end of World War II in Europe. After the war, many aircraft were transferred to the Royal Air Force, and eventually, some were delivered to the Yugoslav Air Force under the Western aid program as part of the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP), a U.S.-led initiative during the early Cold War to support allied and strategically important countries.

Today, this abandoned Dakota greets visitors as a striking landmark, hinting at the adventure and hidden wonders that await at Zeljava Airbase.

Zeljava Airbase: Objekat 505 (Klek)

Beneath the slopes of Mount Plješevica, Objekat 505 hides a labyrinth of tunnels stretching over 3.5 kilometers, carved in the shape of a small letter “M.” Four massive doors — two entrances and two exits — once sealed the complex, protecting aircraft, personnel, and vital Cold War operations from view and attack. Today, visitors can walk through these impressive corridors, experiencing the raw scale, eerie atmosphere, and hidden secrets of one of Europe’s largest abandoned military complexes.
